Romantic comedies sell fantasy. Ultimately, that's their reason for being - to make even the most cynical heart crave true love. Some romantic comedies, this one included, fail because of an inability to convince the audience that the protagonists deserve to live happily ever after. There's a simple romantic comedy litmus test. Ask this question: By the time the moment of decision arrives, are we rooting for these two to be together? Is their union, inevitable though it may be in a movie world where formula is valued over all else, the only path to a satisfying ending? Sadly, for Made of Honor, with its drawn-out, poorly developed love affair and paper thin characters, the answer is no. We expect the two leads to end up together - not because they inspire us to quote sonnets but because that's how we have been conditioned. I like it when a movie seduces me; this one doesn't.
The point of Made of Honor seems to be to get a product into theaters that can capitalize on Patrick Dempsey's transformation from his teenage McWeenie to his adult McDreamy. However, having gotten the actor, the filmmakers apparently didn't feel it necessary to develop a movie that worked on any level. And, while the term "chemistry" is overused, it's a valid descriptor for the spark of interaction that must be present between two characters whenever a relationship (whether platonic or romantic) occurs. There's little between Dempsey and his co-star, Michelle Monaghan, although one senses that, based on the opening "meet cute" scene, there could have been had the screenplay allowed these two to spend some quiet time together without the annoying secondary characters constantly polluting the mix.

The film opens with the meeting between Tom (Dempsey) and Hannah (Monaghan) during his senior year at college. Ten years later, they're best friends but their relationship is strictly platonic. In fact, Hannah may be the only woman in New York City with whom Tom has not slept. He has sex with a different woman almost every night (and never the same one twice in any week - that's one of many rules he lives by), then regales Hannah with stories of his conquests. He then reveals to his generic male posse that he has the perfect life: variety in the bedroom and companionship with Hannah in other areas of his life. The stability of his existence is shaken, however, when she goes on a six-week business trip to Scotland. While she's there, he realizes his feelings are more than friendly and vows to tell her upon her return. Unfortunately for him, when she shows up in New York, she has a bloke (Kevin McKidd) in tow. This man, who apparently has so few flaws that Superman would be envious, is named Colin and is her fiancé. She surprises Tom by asking that he be her "Maid" of Honor. Since he has a better chance to destroy the wedding from the inside than from a distant position, he agrees.

Made of Honor's story is not dissimilar to the one told in My Best Friend's Wedding. Comparing the films is useful in that it shows how frightened Hollywood has recently become by a romance that doesn't fit into a nice, tidy package. Made of Honor establishes in the first scene who will end up together in the last scene. Everything that comes in between is pointless filler. Worse, it's not even interesting filler. For all the scenes that Hannah and Tom share together, there's very little that allows us to see them as more than actors sharing the same shot. Those critical "falling in love" moments are too few and far between for the audience to develop a heartfelt interest in them becoming a couple.

It might help if Tom was a bit less of a self-centered jerk. He drives like an ass, uses women like the condoms he probably buys by the crate, and believes Hannah should be available whenever he needs an ear or a shoulder. (Nitpick alert… There's a scene in which Tom places a phone call to Hannah while she's in Scotland. He awakens her and she informs him that it's 3 a.m. Meanwhile, Tom is sitting in his apartment in full daylight. How many hours difference does director Paul Weiland thinks there are between Scotland and New York? Even assuming it's the middle of the summer, the sun does not set in Manhattan after 10 p.m.) In order to make Tom more appealing, Made of Honor makes Colin into a stuck-up White Knight stereotype. It would, after all, be dangerous to transform him into a multidimensional character because viewers might be more in favor of the Hannah/Colin pairing. Meanwhile, despite apparently being conflicted between two men, Hannah doesn't do nearly enough soul-searching until the late-innings moment when she and Tom share a lip-lock.

Most of the humor in Made of Honor is tepid, but that's not unusual for a romantic comedies. Unless someone like Judd Apatow is involved, movies in this genre are more interested in melting hearts than busting guts. Made of Honor does neither. The movie is being touted as "counterprogramming" for Iron Man, but this amounts to providing a stale, unremarkable alternative to something that's surprisingly fresh and energetic. Made of Honor is a prefabricated example of shoddy workmanship.

Iron Man Movie ReviewBy: The Dude Iron Man slapped my world silly. It's a pretty kickass movie. It contains almost everything I want out of a moviegoing experience. Let's go to the checklist:1) Robots (or men in robot suits) fighting.2) Badass electric guitar anytime said robots make a move. The only thing is, the movie needed to end with a high-five. (That and a Salma Hayek dancing scene is always appreciated). But that doesn't negate the impact of how pretty freakin rad Iron Man is. Downey gives a great performance as Tony Stark, and is just having the time of his life. Sort of like Depp in the first Pirates movie, how carefree he was about the whole affair, in his own world doing his own little thing. He's a good guy, that Robert Downey Jr. Jon Faverau was defintely the right guy to direct this movie. He has a great sense of tone and pacing, and a style that differentiates this from the other super hero flicks. Not for nothing, but I really enjoy how each comic book hero gets a different style and feel to their respective films. It's all about matching the right material with the right filmmaker, and with Faverau, Iron Man has found his match.If there is any complaint I have (aside from the lack of a high five at the end), it's that the movie feels a little slight. It's a wonderful origin story, but you spend so much time watching Tony Stark become Iron Man, but I want to see more of what he does As Iron Man. I guess that's what the sequel's for.

Good-hearted and well-meaning, but socially inept and clueless about the ways of women, the brothers Solomon would like to grant their dad his dying wish and provide him with a grandchild.
Dean and John Solomon (Will Forte and Will Arnett) learned everything they know from their father, who unfortunately didn't teach his kids anything about the birds and the bees. When dear old dad's dying wish is to have a grandchild, the two mentally and romantically-deficient siblings go about finding a woman to impregnate, which proves to be rather difficult.

Ocean's Thirteen Loses One, and is Back to...Twelve?

The final installment for Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's series, Ocean's Thirteen, is coming out this summer -- June 8th to be exact. Last August, Erik shared that this would be the end of the director's Ocean dalliances, and that this sequel was only being made to appease George Clooney. Obviously, this doesn't mean that someone else couldn't again revive the series, but for now it's the end. Of course, whenever you end something extremely popular, it has to go out with a bang. Big names, big action and big endings -- in more ways than one. (Stop reading now if you're antsy about potential spoilers.)

Well, we've already got extra big names added to the star-studded cast, Ellen Barkin and Al Pacino, as Scott Weinberg shared last year. The action, I'm sure it will be there. But what of the endings? Don Cheadle had some interesting things to say about the end of the series and what happens with his character, Basher Tarr -- explosives expert. MTV News says that while other actors have shown an interest in continuing the series, he's out: "It'll be [in theaters] June 8, and I'm taking Basher out in a way I couldn't have anticipated. I hope other people don't see it coming either." Does this mean that they're going to kill him off? If they were, I can't see him spoiling the surprise, so maybe this isn't about him being taken out of the mortal coil, but out of the business? Thoughts?

"Two Days In Paris" is a perfect film of proper blending of romance and comedy. The film starts with Marion - a French photographer and an American interior designer were in a perfect vacation on Italy and they stop off in Paris which is the home town of Marion where Jack has to deal with a new language and a crazy family of Marion. That family was a sexually frank family having a vast collection of ex-boyfriends. Jack was feeling like he is in a small heaven at the heart of the city of lights. They begin to see each other in a different, less appealing light as the cultural divide between them grows. Will these two days in Paris be Jack and Marion’s last days as a couple, or will they be the beginning of a new, richer life together?

After seeing and loving Rocky Balboa, it's a lot harder for me to roll my eyes over the prospect of another Rambo film. That Sylvester Stallone looks ridiculous in these photos really can't be argued, however. We posted a fairly positive script review a while back that bodes well, and it's got a decent cast, but ... man. Seeing the 60 year-old Stallone in a mullet and a low-cut blouse, it's just too much. Most of these shots are of Stallone grimacing, but there's what appears to be a couple of action sequences in the mix as well.

Story

Rambo is living a monastic lifestyle in Bangkok and salvaging old PT boats and tanks for scrap metal. When a group of volunteers bringing supplies into Burma disappears, a relative of one of the missing missionaries begs Rambo to find them. He heads off with a team of young guns determined to rescue those that have been taken.

The latest film in the “Die Hard” will start shooting later this month, with two new actors joining Bruce Willis.As Variety reports, Justin Long and Maggie Q were chosen as the co-stars for “Live Free or Die Hard”, with “Underworld”'s Len Wiseman directing.
The 28 year-old Long previously appeared in “Herbie Fully Loaded” and “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”.
Maggie Q recently appeared in “Mission: Impossible III”.
Rumors of a fourth “Die Hard” film were in circulation since “Die Hard With a Vengeance” was released in 1995.
"Our villain is high-tech, but the way McClane deals with him is low-tech. A fist fight still solves a lot of problems", said director Wiseman towards the nature of the film.”
Live Free or Die Hard” is set to be released next June.
